So, why, if we already have a root attribute, does ordering still matter?

Either rely on ordering, or rely on an attribute, but not both!

Honestly, I still don't quite understand it, so I might be the wrong 
person to document this topic.

But you could at least mention on 
http://yanel.wyona.org/en/documentation/how-to-add-a-new-realm.html that 
"thou shalt not, under no circumstances, addeth thy new realm at the 
bottom of the realms list", or something along these lines...
