    It seems to me that the "old" Tomcat 5.5.20 was doing session

    serialization by default, whereas the "new" Tomcat 7.0.25 doesn't,

    which I think is rather a pity. IIUC one needs to set

    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;

      charset=ISO-8859-15">
