OK, I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature. This was the problem:

In the sample application that I am using for testing the patched
search resource, the normal search field was not appending the request
parameter "page" which is required if pagination parameters are
defined in the resource configuration, thus causing an exception. I
have now added this parameter (with value=1) as a hidden input field
to the search box, and it is working. I believe that this behaviour is
OK, but I am not sure.

For now, I will not change the patch, but if you feel that this should
be changed, please comment, and I will implement it differently.
