Really ot sure it's related but does

somehow somewhere lack an accessible (i.e. probably not JS- but 
CSS-based) implementation of collapsable menus in Yanel?

Agreed.

I don't think the layout needs to be easily extensible from a designer 
POV, it's only there for demo purposes after all, and it isn't I don't 
think it reflects badly on Yanel, only on the layout itself.
