well, if java or javac is at /usr/local/jdk1.5/bin/java or 
/usr/local/jdk1.5/bin/javac

then

JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/jdk1.5

and

PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

the binary distribution contains all the necessary libs within WEB-INF/libs
