Ok, I rediscovered (I just had forgotten about it) this very nice, long-running
and indeed quite famous list named 'TTW ("Through the Web") WYSIWYG Web
Editors': http://www.geniisoft.com/showcase.nsf/WebEditors

>From this there are a few more interesting contenders with cross-browser
support:
 - Xinha (BSD-like licensed following of the old htmlArea):
http://xinha.webfactional.com/
    - license: http://svn.xinha.org/trunk/license.txt
    - demo(link in list is broken):
http://www.xinha.org/xinha-nightly/examples/ExtendedDemo.html
    - XHTML does not seem supported out of the box at 1st sight
    - (from the list) does not seem to support Safari and so not Chrome though
:/
 - the editor included in the Dojo Javascript library
http://dojocampus.org/explorer/#Dijit_Editor_Custom Toolbar
    - license: BSD can be chosen http://dojotoolkit.org/license
    - as is seems to only an be example more than a product, using this would
probably require extending it and so learning Dojo which may take a while...
 - also Loki does only XHTML but is GPL-licensed :(
